Sallycares.com is here to help you.
We are a membership web resource, developed by an Occupational Therapist (Sally), to provide education and resources to manage the medical and/or health related challenges that you and your loved ones are facing.
Since we have a number of "experienced" people in the State of Florida, and our seniors are a very important part of the population we serve, you will find a lot of information at Sallycares.com, geared toward that age group. I have provided Occupational Therapy services for over 35 years, the last 18 years in the west coast of Florida. I can tell you that our "Seniors" in Florida are in pretty good shape (for the most part). When people get out more, and become more active, it would make sense to think that better health would result. The average age in southwest Florida is between 65-67, although it appears that number goes up during the winter months, when the "snow birds are here." From my experience it seems that most of the younger people that moved to this area when I did, were here specifically to help their parents or family members that had moved down here to retire, and there had been a medical emergency with a parent, that brought them here. I fell into that category.
I moved to southwest Florida in 1994. My parents retired here in 1992 and built a home. They planned to have fun and enjoy their "Golden Years." I was living outside Atlanta at that time. I only visited once when they first moved here, and I felt like I had never seen so many elderly people in one place in my life! Unfortunately my mother had a blood disorder in 1993, and passed away two weeks after she was diagnosed. She was 68 years old. My father was a "fish out of water." He was depressed and returned to drinking more than he should. I moved to southwest Florida. I was a Caregiver for my father, who had a health related crisis annually, until he passed away in 2007. So I can relate to Caregivers in a BIG way!
This web site is designed to help manage healthcare conditions that primarily "Seniors" find themselves facing. But this site will also help the Caregivers or Care-Partners that are helping the "Seniors," because our goal is to help you find resources and problem solve the issues you are dealing with. Remember: The information you may take away from Sallycares.com should NEVER replace the advice you receive from your physician and the healthcare providers that are treating you.
Whether you are a resident of Florida or you have relatives that are "snowbirds" (people that "flock" to Florida in the winter), you will find helpful information here.
