The Relationship Between Humans And Loud Music

Written by
While out walking our dogs with a neighbor on a warm, autumn Sunday morning, we discussed plans for the day. She mentioned she and her husband were going to the theater that evening to hear a New Orleans jazz trombone player and his ensemble. My husband’s ears perked up, as he played trombone in his high school marching band. Too late to buy tickets beforehand, we were in the ticket line 30 minutes before the performance began. End seats on the main floor or center seats in the third row of the balcony? Center seats topped end seats, so the balcony it was. Climbing the steps to the upper level, my husband commented to me, “If you don’t like it, we’ll leave at half-time.” I laughed, teasing him, asking if he meant “intermission.” I then said, “Why would I want to leave? I love music.” We waited with anticipation for…

Cortico Basilar Degeneration

Written by
Cortico Basilar Degeneration (CBD) or Corticobasal Ganglionic Degeneration (CBGD) is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease that involves the cerebral cortex and the basal ganglia.  It is often referred to as one of the neurological disorders that falls under the title of "parkinsonism" because as the disease evolves, a person begins to demonstrate characteristics that can be confused with Parkinsons disease.  In fact there are many patients who are initially diagnosed with Parkinsons disease, only to be told "down the road" that they don't have true or ideopathic Parkinsons disease, but rather one of the "imitators," which CBD is sometimes called. You can find information about this disease on the internet, but one of the frustrating things about being diagnosed with a condition like CBD, is that the symptoms are not as consistently similar from patient to patient, like the symptoms that most Parkinsons patients have, and the disease does not respond to…

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month Take some time this month to learn more about this illness, to understand what it means to those who love someone afflicted, to those who dedicate themselves to seeing they are cared for, and ensuring that their lives continue to have meaning and dignity. There are many ways to become educated about a condition or disease. With Alzheimer’s, there are hundreds of books available to explain it, advise what to do about it, how to handle it, and offer solutions and support for caregivers. These are excellent resources. However, stories that enlighten through the careful balance of useful facts and a cast of relatable and realistic characters may be a better way to shed light on this and many other medical issues. This type of presentation enables the reader to get inside the head of the Alzheimer’s patient, their caregivers, spouse, children, and…

Pocket Door Challenges

Written by
Here is something I came up with, to help a person with peripheral neuropathy in his hands. He couldn't close a bathroom pocket door, because he couldn't grasp the metal piece that allows you to open and close it. Not all pocket doors are the same, but consider trying something like this; a key ring attached to a clasp.  It worked for this guy and may work for someone you know! If you have some ideas to share just email us and let us know if we can give you "Sally's Spotlight" to share your tricks and tips! xo Sally

New Year - New You?

Written by
Here we are.  Happy New Year!  2015 is a new year.  No matter what happened in the past, it's history.  It is time to look in the mirror and be the person you know you can be. It doesn't matter how old you are, what color your hair is, or how aggravated you are with your situation.  This is the year we have to take responsibility for who we are.  No more excuses.  If we are angry and we make our families miserable, we need to own it, and we need to change. If we need to get in better shape and improve our health, we are the ones that will benefit.  (actually so will our families...) There is no need to say things like; "I can't," "That doesn't work," "What does it matter,"...no those comments are going to be forbidden in 2015. The reality is that you can change. …

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Written by
Make this Christmas and holiday season one to remember. In the hustle and bustle of all that surrounds you, think back to your best memories of the past Christmas holidays you shared with family and friends. What stands out as being your favorite things that you recall? When I was growing up in Michigan, my Mother had the market on baking cookies. In fact that was what she was known for. The house we lived in had a side porch that acted like an extra freezer, because the temperatures were always freezing in December and January. She would stack 12-14 tins of cookies out there, and pull them in one by one to make assorted platters of cookies for friends and families. My children still talk about it. Even though Mom and Dad are now in heaven with the angels, we can still recall similar feelings of warmth, family, and…

Thanksgiving

Written by
Thanksgiving deserves the "Spotlight."  It is a wonderful holiday, where people set aside the day to give thanks for family, friends, and the opportunity to show people that we care. Thanksgiving is also the kick off point for the holiday season.  There are so many who have needs around us.  There is illness, fatigue related to caregiving, and the need we all have to be sensitive to what others are going through.  What do you plan to do to be a light to another during this holiday season?  There are many organizations and opportunites to help others.  Please consider donating your resources or your time (or both) to be a gift to someone else. Don't forget about our men and women who serve our Country!  They make sacrifices for us each and every day!  Sending a card is always appreciated, if funds are low.  Remember it's the thought that counts! Some organizations…
A few months ago I had the pleasure of attending a presentation given by Anne Curtis, MA, RDT, CTSS (Drama Therapist) and Anissa Mitchell, LCSW (Social Worker). They have a very creative approach to their Parkinsons Disease Support Group at the Florida Hospital. Their Drama Therapy based intervention was featured recently at the North American Drama Therapy Association's Conference and the World Parkinsons Congress.  They incorporate drama, fun, creativity, music, singing and movement in each session they have.  So, instead of focusing on the disease and the problems that the patients and caregivers have, they tend to focus on removing the conventional approach to the support group, and replace it with so much alternative activity, that the participants forget they have Parkinsons, and their caregivers forget about being caregivers.  They just have fun.  Would this approach work for all types of support groups?  Absolutely!  Their example is with Parkinsons Patients,…

Caring for a family member or friend can be a challenge, whether it is your home or theirs. It often turns into a full time job and it is difficult to find enough time to do things well. In our current healthcare maze, it is often asked whether or not Medicare pays for help in the home. The answer is “no.” That leaves many families on their own when it comes to choosing an agency to provide caregivers that they can trust. In my practice I most frequently turn to Visiting Angels. They are a national network of franchised, non-medical, senior homecare agencies providing up to 24 hour care in the comfort of the home where the patient is staying. There is no better example of a great Visiting Angel’s Agency than the local agency in Punta Gorda, Florida. Sunny Cavanaugh is the owner of the agency. When writing this,…
