Access to Activities of Daily Living and Home Modifications is available when you join our email list.
When you have a physical or mental challenge (like forgetfulness), or are caring for someone who has limitations, this will be a very helpful section for you. Trying to figure out how to manage problems with bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting are covered in the Activities of Daily Living Section. Making modifications to rooms in your home, to accommodate equipment and the ability to function, are the focus of the Home Modifications section.
If there are problems with getting food to a person’s mouth, it may have to do with positioning; the equipment that is being used or additional problem solving may be needed. Bathing is always an important safety issue. People use anything and everything to hang on to, to try to stabilize themselves when getting in and out of the shower, not realizing that the towel rack is plastic and breaks easily! Holding onto sliding shower doors…not a good idea. When the doors pop out of their channels, (which they do) – they usually shatter.
There are many situations that can be adapted to be safer. You may not be able to stop all falls, but when you try to put “safety first” you can be proactive and try to avoid them. I find that one of the biggest impediments to changing the way we approach our daily activities (bathing, grooming, toileting, self- care), is when the patient or care-partner does not think their condition is “that bad,” and that they “aren’t ready yet” to have the installation of grab bars, use a shower seat or whatever the need might be.
